Chapter Sixteen

“Your place?”

Brady grimaced, but he couldn’t blame her for the skepticism in her tone. He lifted a hand to stay any immediate protest, then stepped into the room. “I live a few miles outside of town. Not far from the Daniels ranch. I bought a large piece of property out there, and I’m building a house.” He rubbed his neck, wondering if it sounded like he was trying to impress her—which he may have been, but that honestly wasn’t his motivation. “Right now, I’m living in a double-wide mobile home I bought used. It’s kind of dated, but it has three bedrooms. If the girls don’t mind sharing, it would be plenty of room.”

He paused, trying to gauge her blank expression for any indication of how this might be landing. When she didn’t say anything, he went on in a rush.

“Think about it. You would be out of town. We wouldn’t tell anybody but your aunt and uncle and the Jasper PD where you were staying. You’d be with a policeman and a trained police dog,” he said with a shrug. “What could be safer?”

“What happens when you go on duty?”

Brady pondered the possibilities. He had no doubt in his mind he could convince the chief this plan was a good one. And even if he couldn’t, he had plenty of unused leave coming his way. If the department didn’t want to go along, he’d take the days off. He needed to put in a few hours working on his house.

“I can figure things out. As a matter of fact, it might be better if you talked to Vera about not taking any shifts for the next few days. I believe Norton is sticking close, and in my opinion, you need to consider keeping a low profile.”

“Hiding,” she said flatly.

“Better to frame it as keeping yourself and your girls safe,” he said gently.

She sighed and her shoulders slumped. Brady knew he’d won the argument, but it didn’t feel good. Rather than gloating, he focused on logistics.

“What’s your schedule looking like with Blaze’s?”

She shrugged. “I pretty much go in whenever I am free. I’m a trainee, and an hourly employee. Since I can’t take any tours out alone, I wouldn’t be messing with anyone’s schedule but my own.”

Brady searched her expression for a hint of wariness about him. “See? It’s a good plan. You and the girls need to disappear for a few days. We can even put it about town he got scared and moved on.” When she tipped her chin stubbornly, he pressed gently. “I’m not saying you should, but gossip spreads like brush fire around here. A whisper or two in case Norton is listening in somewhere.”

“For the record, I didn’t leave Bozeman because I was scared of Keith Norton. And I didn’t leave Billings because I was scared of my ex-husband. I moved on because I want to live my life and raise my girls in a place we feel safe and secure. But I don’t run away because I’m scared.
